01-23-2007WINONA LAKE Ń Retha Hicks, Winona Lake clerk- treasurer, will run for a fourth term.
Hicks has served as the clerk-treasurer since September 1993.
Council members Dave Delp, Jeff Carroll, Joy Lohse and Jerry Clevenger said they also will run in the May 8 primary. Rolly Ortega said he is undecided about running again.
The general election is Nov. 6. The May primary elections include Syracuse town council offices, Winona Lake town council offices and clerk-treasurer positions and Warsaw city offices.
Filing begins Wednesday and ends Feb. 23 at noon.
Hicks’ responsibilities as the clerk-treasurer include applying for grants, organizing payroll for town employees, developing ordinances and keeping minutes during the Winona Lake town council’s meeting.
Hicks said she decided to run again to represent Winona Lake, the county and the state.
“I feel a strong commitment to serving my community, county and state,” Hicks said. “Our office is the main contact for our town’s residents to contact us with their questions and concerns.”
Hicks said among the things she has accomplished while serving as clerk-treasurer has been developing a system of accounting with cost centers to keep track of expenses for the town’s equipment purchases and capital projects. She also obtained a grant for a recycling program for the town through the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
She said she has goals of working with the county to establish government efficiency and effectiveness.
Hicks currently serves on the Clerk Treasurer’s League as vice president, and will become the league’s president in July. She serves on the executive committee of the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns.
