01-28-2004Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat nor gloom of night will keep mail carriers from their appointed rounds.
But a little help from postal customers can’t hurt to help them get the mail to you.
Don Wiesehan, Warsaw Post Office superviser for customer services, is urging residents to shovel their sidewalks so mail carriers can get through and deliver the many packages, letters and cards that travel through the postal system daily. The carriers work six days a week.
Warsaw has 10 city carriers and 14 rural carriers. If one of them should fall on the snow or ice and break a leg, that would be a hardship, he said.
Asked if there is any certain way best to shovel a path to the mailbox, Wiesehan said most residents know the path of their carrier. They should shovel a walkway that is best for their mailman.
If a person lives on a rural route, they should shovel an approach to their box. Sometimes, when the snowplows go by, the snow is plowed in such a way that it prevents the mail carrier from driving up to the mailbox. Residents should make sure the approach is clear.
