02-19-2007A Leesburg man is in serious condition this morning at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, after a snowmobile accident early Sunday morning.
Jeff D. Carey, of Leesburg, suffered extensive injuries when his snowmobile hit a pile of field stones he mistook for a snow drift. Carey suffered a broken neck and other injuries and was airlifted to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, where he was listed in serious condition this morning.
A passenger on Carey’s vehicle, Amanda K. Janda, 30, of Leesburg, was thrown from the snowmobile and suffered injuries as well. She was treated at Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw.
According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, Carey was driving a snowmobile off CR 750N, east of CR 200E, when he tried to pass through what he thought was a snow drift that actually was a pile of field stones.
When the snowmobile collided with the stones, it vaulted in the air and landed more than 150 feet from the crash. Carey and Janda were thrown from the snowmobile.
The accident remains under investigation by the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
Plain Township Fire Department, Multi-Township EMS, the Kosciusko Fatal/Alcohol Crash Team and Samaritan Air Ambulance assisted at the scene.
