02-19-2007WINONA LAKE – The sounds and songs of Central and south America will fill Rodeheaver Auditorium Tuesday when the Lakeland Community Concert Association presents Alborada: Batista Family Andean Show beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Often mistakenly called “Inca music,” present day Andean folk music is the product of centuries of cultural and ethnic blending, beginning with pre-Colombian wind and percussion instruments in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Columbia, Chile, Paraguay and Mexico.
The Batista family features Milo Batista and his wife Lourdes Briceno de Batista and their children Jhoanna and Paul, who play more than 30 instruments.
They include the guittarra, charango, cuatro, bajo, guitaron, contrabajo, trecilio, tiple and vihuela. Winds include the flauta, flauTa triple, flautas prehispanicas, quena, zamponas, ocarino doble, muertito y pajoro and armonicca.
Percussion instruments include the bombo, platillo, congas, cencerro, claves, huehuetl, palo de luvia, maracas, teponoztil, huesos de frayle, guiro, ccabaza and cha-chas.
Milo Batista was one of the founding members and the long-time musical director of the group Khenany and toured extensively with them, performing at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and many of the nation’s leading theaters and concert halls.
This is the third LCCA program of the 2006 - 2007 season. Individual tickets are $15 each. Children 18-years-old and younger, accompanied by an adult get in free.
Season ticket holders receive free admission to this and concerts in three other towns: Kokomo, LaPorte and Kendallville.
