Battery Alleged On 1-Year-Old

SILVER LAKE –ÊA Connersville man was arrested Tuesday afternoon for allegedly hitting a 1-year-old child in his care.

Christopher A. Powell, 21, of Connersville, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 2:35 p.m. Tuesday on one count of aggravated battery. His bond was set at $10,000.

Powell was babysitting for his girlfriend’s 1-year-old son at a residence at 10402 S. Ind. 15, Silver Lake, when he reportedly hit the child in the head with his hand.

Powell called 911 and told the Kosciusko County Dispatch Center that the child fell and started to have seizures.

Paramedics were sent to the residence and took the child to Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw, where medical personnel determined that the injuries were not consistent with a fall.

The front of the child’s head began to swell and he was transported to Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, where he was listed in stable condition this morning. Staff at the hospital this morning said the child was improving.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department was contacted and when questioned by detectives, Powell reportedly admitted to hitting the child.
