06-29-2005There are 322 names on the southern side of the county war memorial. It’s full.
The first man listed is Jacob Anderek, who died in the Civil War. The last name belongs to fallen Marine David Fribley, who died in Iraq in March 2002.
When M. Todd Fiscus was killed in Afghanistan this spring, the memorial’s north face had to be engraved to accommodate the captain’s name.
The memorial will be rededicated by American Legion Post 49 Monday at 11 a.m., 30 years too soon. When the original monument was erected in 1985, the southern face was expected to have space for 50 years.
The original flag pole has been removed and a new one installed “in front” of the memorial. Concrete will be laid to surround the five-panel granite structure so it is more accessible. Lights will be added for night-time viewing.
