Northenor To Attend GOP National Convention

BY TERESA SMITH, Times-Union Staff Writer

Jean Northenor will travel to New York next month as the Third District delegate to the Republican National Convention, she said today.

She was selected by the Third District committee. Members are from Kosciusko, Allen, Elkhart, DeKalb and Whitley counties. Mike Miner is Third District chairman.

The national convention is Aug. 30 and Sept. 1 and 2, and Northenor said she has a lot of paperwork to fill out before she goes.

“I also was appointed to serve on the rules committee of the convention,” said the longtime state convention delegate. “I’m not sure what all that will encompass. I’m going out early to serve that committee.”

Northenor has served on the state convention rules committee. She has been a state delegate at every convention since 1972.

“I’m excited about it. And maybe a little concerned about going to New York. We hear terrorists would love to disrupt our election process, but you can’t sit at home and worry.

“It’s an honor to be elected by the (Third District) people. I don’t know them all very well.”

The convention will be in Madison Square Garden, where she will join 2,508 other delegates from across the country.

An avid supporter of President George W. Bush, she doubts she’ll meet the man in New York.

“I’ve met both of his parents, though, and they’re wonderful. The chances of meeting the president are slim to none.”

As for sightseeing in the Big Apple, at least one trip is planned:

“A friend (who also will attend the convention) is bound and determined we’re going to appear at the FOX News broadcast booth window.”

Stay tuned.
