Triton Introduces Electronic Grade Books

BY MATTHEW WEIGELT, Times-Union Staff Writer

BOURBON – Hugh Rettinger, Triton Senior High School guidance counselor, introduced the school board Monday to the new wave of teacher aides – the electronic grade book.

“This is just like those old green gradebooks,” said Rettinger, except it is “a much more efficient use of time.”

The grade book graphs and charts student scores, “showing how that kid is doing with the whole (class),” said Rettinger. The grade book updates overall grades with each entry. Grades also can be easily accessible from previous years.

Some teachers are still recording grades in the old grade books but the teachers are required to turn in midterm and end-of-term grades electronically.

Rettinger acknowledged one teacher inconvenience: the electronic grade book cannot go home. Teachers with grades to record have to stay at school longer entering grades.

Rettinger recommended that the teachers print a hard copy of the information with each update, just in case.

In other business, the board:

• Was updated by Superintendent Ted Chittum about a computer virus that attacked the school corporation’s computer network.

Rettinger and other computer technicians worked late for two nights fixing the problem and installing anti-virus software.

“It took many hands,” said Chittum. More than 200 computers had to be corrected.

Chittum said that while cleaning out the computer system, 1,900 viruses were detected when they were only 9 percent into the process. Although the viruses were not halting the system, they were affecting it in minimal ways.

On Oct. 15, Chittum said, the system needs reviewing to prevent the same system problems. The computer network is now protected with a firewall, a barrier preventing unauthorized access to the network.

• Stated officially that the corporation’s enrollment numbers were up by 9.5 students from 2000-01. The corporation’s enrollment total is 1,086.

• Hired Carrie Orlowski as the high school student council sponsor and Angela Flenar as the ninth grade cheerleading sponsor.

• Mentioned that Triton High School’s former baseball coach Jim Shively was named the Class A coach of the year.

The board’s next public meeting is scheduled for Oct. 15.

Triton School Board members are: president Steve Blackford, vice president Steve Feldman, secretary Larry Lemler, Dave Shively and Kevin Boyer. Corporation treasurer is Janet Barker and superintendent is Ted Chittum.
