KABS Marks 25 Years

Staff Report

Kosciusko Area Bus Service marks its 25th year of operation Nov. 6-10 with a series of prizes for riders.

In operation since 1981, KABS originally was intended as a mode of transportation for clients of Cardinal Center. It soon became clear that the community’s need for transportation extended well beyond the disabled population.

Today, KABS schedules more than 70,000 rides each year.

“Today’s riders include the elderly, who need to get to their appointments but no longer drive or can’t afford to drive because of gas prices, as well as many people who need to get to work and don’t have a license,” said Rita Baker, KABS manager. “Without a doubt, our fastest-growing rider group is school children who need a ride to after-school programs. We have an entire bus dedicated to children’s needs and could fill another if we had the resources.”

Next week every 25th rider will receive a token for a free ride.

Every 250th passenger on each city bus route will receive a free ticket good for 10 rides. Five passengers per route will receive a gift bag.

The longest-riding city bus passenger will receive a special prize.

Throughout the week, each person who purchases a ticket at KABS will get one additional free ride with each ticket purchased.
