Wienhorst's Contract Not Renewed

Times-Union Staff Report

Five months after its varsity girls basketball team played in the state championship game, Warsaw Community High School is looking for a new head coach.

Will Wienhorst, who guided the Tigers to a 26-3 record and a state runner-up finish during the 2003-2004 season, will not return for his 19th season at WCHS.

At a school board meeting Monday evening, Wienhorst’s contract was not renewed.

Contacted this morning by telephone, WCHS Athletic Director Dave Fulkerson would not comment on the situation, saying only that it was a school board decision.

Wienhorst, who was the head coach at South Newton High School prior to coming to Warsaw, was the subject of a recent police investigation. A restraining order was issued, and there was no basis for any charges, police said.

During the course of the investigation, statements indicated Wienhorst made inappropriate comments to team members.

In 25 years of coaching, Wienhorst owns a 406-134 record. In his 18 years at WCHS, he compiled a 316-93 record, taking the Tigers to the state finals in 1991 and 2004. Wienhorst coached four Indiana All-Stars, including this year’s Miss Basketball.
