South Bend Riley Wins Valley Baseball Invitational

MENTONE – South Bend Riley beat Southwood and then Tippecanoe Valley in the championship game to win the Valley Invite Saturday.

Valley and Wawasee matched up in the first game. Valley went ahead 6-2 after three innings, but Wawasee scored five in the fourth. Valley tied the game in the fifth and won in the 10th as Bryce Gast was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Aaron Hart had four hits in the game for Valley.

In the championship, Valley led 4-1 after four innings, but Riley scored six in the fifth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh for the win.

Hart added four more hits to go 8-for-10 on the day with a home run.

Valley will host North Judson today at 5 p.m. while Wawasee will be at Concord today at 4:30 p.m.

At Nappanee, NorthWood beat Plymouth Friday and Bremen Saturday.

Against Plymouth, Dustin Potts had a two-run double in the third inning that was followed by a single from Ryan Mattern that tied the game at 3-3. The Panthers scored one more in the fifth to get a win. Nate Brown pitched all seven innings for the win.

Against Bremen, Todd McDonald gave up just four hits and shut down Bremen with the bases loaded twice late in the game as the Panthers got a win.

NorthWood (7-9) will host Goshen today at 4:30 p.m.

At Monticello, Manchester’s baseball team went 2-0 in Saturday’s Twin Lakes Tournament.

The Squires scored three runs in the sixth inning to beat Twin Lakes in the championship game. Tom Hardy and Lee Shafer had two hits each for the Squires. Dusty Butterbaugh pitched them to the win, allowing four hits in seven innings. He struck out six.

The Squires advanced to the championship game by beating Northwestern in the first round. Derek Ring had three hits, including a homer and double, and four RBIs for the Squires. Mitch Eads and Butterbaugh also had two hits each. Jason Branham allowed one run and four hits in six innings.

Manchester, 8-6, is at South Bend Riley at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

JV: Warsaw Goes 1-1

At Dunlap, Warsaw’s junior varsity baseball team went 1-1 in Saturday’s Concord Tournament.

The Tigers lost to East Noble 3-2 in the first game then overcame six errors to beat South Bend LaSalle 8-6 in the second game.

Warsaw, 11-4, hosts Fairfield at Boggs Industrial Park at 4:30 this evening.

Manchester Wins TRC Tournament

At South Whitley, Manchester beat out both Southwood and Valley to win the TRC tennis tournament Saturday.

For Tippecanoe Valley, the No. 1 doubles team of Bonnie Bickel and Carissa Parker placed first. They went 3-0 and never dropped a set.

Manchester will host Huntington North today at 4:30 p.m. Valley will be at Rochester today at 4:30 p.m. and Whitko will host Manchester Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

At Rochester, Tippecanoe Valley placed sixth with a score of 325 while Warsaw ended seventh with a score of 330 Saturday. Marion won the event with a 296.

For Valley, Drew Shafer shot a 78 and Andy Martin had a 79.

For Warsaw, Jason Henthorn shot a 79 and Justin Howell ended with an 80.

Warsaw will host LaVille and South Bend Adams Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. while Valley will be at Southwood with Wawasee Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Warsaw Takes Fourth, Wawasee Ninth

At Kendallville, Warsaw’s boys track and field team placed fourth out of 10 teams in Saturday’s East Noble Relays.

Carroll won with 106 points and was followed by East Noble with 75, Elkhart Memorial with 61 and Warsaw with 56. Wawasee scored 11. Elkhart Memorial is ranked sixth and Carroll eighth in the latest poll.

Warsaw finished with two first places. Scott Shepherd won the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 11 inches. Warsaw’s 1,600-meter relay team of Jose Esquivel, Shaun Mudd, Steve Fussle and Jon Hill placed first with a time of 3:28.4.

Warsaw hosts Plymouth and Goshen at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The Wildcats blasted Knox 10-0 in their second game.

Valley, 3-8, is at Bethany Christian at 4:30 this afternoon.

Whitko, 3-8, hosts North Miami at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
