02-23-2000Kosciusko County businesses and some school representatives raised at least $2,600 for scholarships Tuesday – and had fun doing it.
In the first Community Quiz Bowl, 26 teams of up to six people each showed off their knowledge – or lack of – Tuesday in the Warsaw Community High School Career Center Gym.
Questions asked by emcee Harvey Miller focused on the contestants’ knowledge of trivia pertaining to Warsaw (question: What was the name of the building built in 1870 to seat 4,000 people? Answer: Wigwam), Kosciusko County (What three towns were vying to become the county seat? Leesburg, Oswego and Warsaw) and Indiana (Who wrote the state song, “On the Banks of the Wabash”? Paul Dresser).
Contestants took the contest quite seriously: some dressed in matching T-shirts or baseball caps, one team wore hard hats and the Bowen Center’s mascot, Orby, was there to cheer on his (her?) team.
In the end, a team from Warsaw Community Schools won the brain game, with a score of 61 out of a possible 75. Team members were Adrian Coplen, Dan Coplen, Jeannette Harvuot, Jim Harvuot and Dick Rooker. The team was sponsored by Keith Reinholt and Reinholt’s Town Square Furniture.
The event was the brainchild of the Warsaw Community Foundation for Public Education Inc. The foundation sponsors such programs as the Partnership Program, which links local businesses with area schools; the Mini-Grant Program, which provides funding for special classroom projects; the Fall Arts and Craft Show; and the A-1 Program, which recognizes students in grades nine to 12 who earn straight A’s throughout the school year.
And to further compliment – or embarrass – the companies that competed, here’s a list of all companies and their scores (remember, 75 was a perfect score):
