Close Hauled

My blown out mainsail doesn't slow down much with a single reef. The boat just heels less.

I wanted a picture of the 'sea' state on Winona this afternoon, but by the time I was able to get the camera out things had calmed down. The chop is still about 1 ft. in this shot, but a half hour earlier things were really cracking. The lake was covered with streaks of foam blowing off curling swells.

The boat feels great in a blow. It digs in and takes off. The only problem is our little lake. By the time I tack and get things set, it's time to tack again.

Our pier is dead ahead. A little point to the North (just outside the stay) creates a little sheltered cove. There will be almost no wind in there even today. It's fun to roar in, hit the calm, drop the sails & coast up to the pier. It's more geography than skill. Just don't tell the neighbors.
